What’s New in newmonth

In the app, Settings → Help & Support → What’s New shows the highlights of the latest update. Here is everything that changed in every version, newest first.

Version 0.13.0

Latest

New

  • Help inside the app

How-to pages for every part of newmonth, including what the numbers, colors and lines on Budget and Accounts mean. Tap an ⓘ, or Help in a tab's ⋯ menu; Settings → Help & Support → Help has them all, with search. Spotlight finds them too.

Changed

  • One spending figure across Insights

A refund now lowers its category's spending instead of counting as income, so This Month, Where It Went and Cashflow show the same spending. Categories that got more back than they spent appear under Money Back; past months' Cashflow bars change accordingly. Category Trends no longer counts money taken out of To Assign as spending.

  • How It Works moved into Help

Cashflow, Months Ahead and Net Worth no longer end in a How It Works card. An ⓘ at the top of every Insights detail screen opens that screen's Help page, with new pages for Where It Went, Category Trends and Ignore One-Offs too. Months Ahead keeps one line on what the number means.

Fixed

  • Money from a tracking account reaches To Assign

A transfer from an investment or other tracking account into a budget account left To Assign unchanged and showed Category Needed, which you couldn't fix. It now goes to To Assign. Into a credit card, it pays down the card and shows as a transfer.

  • A transfer from a tracking account keeps its category, and you can pick one

Saving any change to such a transfer that had a category, usually from a YNAB import, removed the category, so the money dropped out of your budget. It now stays, and the form lets you pick one. A budget account starts on To Assign, a card or loan on no category.

  • Transfers to a tracking account count as Category Needed

Money moved to an investment or other tracking account without a category showed Category Needed on the row, but Home and the Category Needed filter left it out. Now they list it too.

  • A category's transactions show money that came back into it

Tapping a category under Where It Went hid a transfer from a tracking account into that category, so a Money Back figure had no visible source. The list now shows it, and Home's Category Needed count includes such a transfer when it still has no category.

  • Find Match keeps a transfer a transfer

Merging an imported row with a transfer you entered by hand could make a card payment count as spending a second time, or drop the category you picked for money moved to a tracking account. The merged row now keeps the transfer's category, tapping anywhere on a match merges it, and the sheet lists its matches on the first open.

  • Budget keeps your place when you fold an iPhone Duo or rotate your iPhone

Folding the phone, or turning any iPhone to landscape and back, sent Budget back to the top of your categories and dropped an amount you were still typing. It now stays where you were.

  • Transactions keeps your place when the sidebar comes or goes

Folding or unfolding an iPhone Duo, or resizing the app's window on an iPad, sent the list back to the top. It now stays where you were.

  • The Uncleared filter shows transfers into an account

Filtering Transactions to one account and Uncleared left out money transferred into that account, and could say everything was cleared. Those transfers are listed now.

  • Category Trends lists each account once

Under Payees, transfers imported from YNAB showed the account's name and ones made in newmonth showed "Transfer", so one account could take two rows. Each transfer now counts under its other account, and tapping the row lists them all.

  • Reconcile keeps its spacing with help text off

With Show Help Text off, the transactions ran right up against the balances. They now sit a small gap below them.

  • Tap anywhere on a row to select it

After Select, only the circle at the start of a row picked it, and tapping the rest of the row did nothing. Now the whole row works.

  • The iCloud Sync screen is accurate about signing out

Signed out, it said your budget was only on this device. Signing out can remove it from this device, but it isn't lost: it stays in iCloud and comes back when you sign in with the same Apple Account. Only changes that haven't reached iCloud yet can't come back.

  • Refunds no longer count as spending when you manage a category

A month that got more back than it spent drew a full bar under Monthly Spending and raised Avg Spent. That month now counts as 0, and so do Spent Last Month and Average Spent in Quick-Assign.

Version 0.12.0

New

  • Add up a receipt while you enter it

Amount fields in Add Transaction, Budget and Move Money have a ± key for + − × ÷ =, with the running total above the amount; with a hardware keyboard, just type the operators. In Move Money, an amount now counts only once you confirm it with ✓.

  • Track what your investments are worth

Investment tracking accounts get Update Value: type what the account is worth and newmonth records the gain or loss. The account shows Current Value, Invested and Gain, and reminds you once the value is more than five weeks old.

  • Net Worth shows what you saved and what your investments made

In Insights → Net Worth, the change over the period now splits into Saved and Gain, the same gain your investment accounts show. Money you move into an investment counts as saved.

  • iCloud sync status in Settings

The new iCloud Sync row shows whether this iPhone's changes are reaching iCloud, and why not when they aren't. While sync is stuck, Export a Backup saves a copy of your budget.

  • newmonth on iPad, and more on screen when there's room

newmonth is now a real iPad app. On wider screens — an iPad, an open iPhone Duo, a Plus or Pro Max held sideways — Home and Insights show two columns, Budget shows a category's details beside the list, and Transactions and Accounts get a sidebar.

  • See what iCloud is syncing

Tap the Syncing… pill to see what has arrived so far. When a budget someone shared with you is ready, the pill says so: tap it, then Switch.

  • What's New after an update

After an update, a card on Home shows the new version's highlights, once. You can always read them under Settings → Help & Support → What's New.

Changed

  • Category Trends opens one category at a time

In Insights → Category Trends, tapping a category opens its own page: its average spending, how often and how much you spend there, and its top payees. Figures now count finished months only, so the month in progress no longer skews them.

  • Monthly spending in Manage Category

Manage Category now charts what the category spent in each of the last 12 months, with a line at your average.

  • Alerts move into the Budget list

Only To Assign stays pinned at the top, now filled green (coral once you've assigned more than you have). Alerts are the first card of the list, and in assign mode the Quick-Assign rules open from the ⚡ on the To Assign card.

  • Liquid Glass buttons

The + button and the month at the top of Budget are now Liquid Glass, and edit and search are two round buttons. On Transactions, Select has its own button.

  • Budget search looks like the system search

The search field now opens in the top bar with the filter chips beneath, like on Transactions.

  • The + button only steps aside while the keyboard is up

On Budget, it no longer disappears while an amount field is open with the keyboard put away.

  • Smoother everywhere

Budget, Transactions, Accounts, Home, Insights, Move Money and the entry sheet now animate their changes instead of switching in one step: groups fold, figures roll to their new value, select mode and sidebars slide in, filters fade. The To Assign card no longer blinks when you enter assign mode.

  • Pricing, said up front

The welcome screen and Settings now say what's ahead: newmonth is free today, paid plans come later for less than a coffee a month, and if you're here before then, you get 3 months free.

  • Only an empty account can be deleted

Move or delete an account's transactions first, or keep it closed to keep its history. Deleting no longer moves transactions into another account, where they silently changed its figures. Deleting selected transactions now includes reconciled ones, after a warning.

  • Clearer sync warnings

When your iCloud storage is full, or the owner's is in a shared budget, the warning now says so and where to free up space. Hiding the warning keeps it hidden, even across restarts, until the problem changes.

  • Reserved payee names

Names newmonth uses for its own entries, such as "Opening Balance" or "Value Update", can no longer be typed as a payee.

Fixed

  • Drill-downs show reconciled transactions again

With Hide Reconciled on, lists opened from Where It Went, a category or Manage Payees came up empty although the amount above counted them. They now always show every transaction behind the figure.

  • The + button stays after you turn an open iPhone Duo

It used to disappear after you typed an amount on Budget, tapped away and turned the phone.

  • A weekly goal's bar is right while you assign

Lowering the assignment of a weekly goal that held more than its target drew its bar too short until you saved.

  • Getting Started no longer ticks a step you didn't do

Switching your iPhone's language ticked Personalize your categories.

  • A deleted account no longer leaves Transactions empty

When Transactions was filtered by an account or category you deleted, the filter now clears instead of leaving an empty list.

  • Picking a currency goes back to the budget

In New Budget and Edit Budget, choosing a Currency now returns you to the form.

  • Every account list says whose account it is

In a shared budget, someone else's closed accounts, the account filter on Transactions and linked accounts in Manage Category now show the owner's name too.

  • New Category opens smoothly

Tapping New Category while choosing a category in Add Transaction no longer stalls the page mid-slide.

  • German: group totals show "Zugewiesen" in full

On Budget, group totals in the thousands no longer cut the label to "Zugewies…".

  • German: one word for overspending

The app now says „Überziehung" everywhere, never „Überschreitung".

  • German: the CSV column rows are in German

Import Transactions → Map Columns no longer lists its column rows in English.

  • The "Available changed" note shows up on every screen

Fixing a transaction in a list opened from Home, a category or while reconciling now shows the note right there instead of behind the screen.

Version 0.11.0

New

  • Apple Pay and your bank's message for the same purchase find each other

When a bank alert arrives a day or two after an Apple Pay tap for the same purchase, it wears a Possible Match pill. Open it and pick Same Transaction to keep one, or Keep Both; newmonth never merges them by itself.

  • Payee rules keep bank names readable

A rule renames an incoming payee ("REWE SAGT DANKE 47281" becomes "REWE") and can put it straight into a category, for imports, captures and payees you type for the first time. Turn on Remember for future transactions when you rename or merge a payee; Payees → Rules lists them all.

  • A payment you already entered isn't recorded twice anymore

When Apple Pay Capture or Bank Alerts picks up a payment you already typed in or scheduled, it now matches that transaction instead of adding a second one, and your payee, category and date stay. When only the amount fits, newmonth asks with a Possible Match pill instead of guessing.

  • Notifications

newmonth can now remind you, even while it's closed, of a card or loan payment coming due, a scheduled transaction due today, and the day you assign your money. Turn them on in Settings → Personalization → Notifications. A notification never posts anything, and in a shared budget each person turns on their own.

  • A notification as soon as an automation records a transaction

When Bank Alerts or Apple Pay Capture adds a transaction while newmonth is closed, a notification names the payee, amount and category; tap it to review. It also tells you when a bank alert had an amount newmonth couldn't read. The switch is New transactions under Settings → Notifications.

  • Your bank's transaction e-mails and texts can fill your budget

The new Shortcuts action Add Transactions from Bank Alert takes your bank's whole message, finds the transactions in it, one per line, and puts them in your review list. Settings → Automation → Bank Alerts walks you through the setup.

  • Apple Intelligence can read bank alerts that don't list transactions line by line

When your bank writes prose or a table, the on-device model finds the payee and amount, and nothing leaves your iPhone. The switch is under Settings → Automation → Bank Alerts.

  • A repeating goal can top up instead of setting aside

Goals that repeat every few months or once a year now offer Top up to: money already in the category counts, and the goal asks only for the rest. Set aside stays the default.

  • A repeating goal can count the money already in its category

The new switch Count … already in the category in Edit Goal starts a set-aside goal's first cycle from what's already there, say because you were saving before you set the goal up. From the next cycle on, it sets aside the full amount.

  • The Add Transaction shortcut action now says what the amount is

A Type field picks Expense (the default), Income, or Signed Amount for figures that carry their own sign, like "-107,10 EUR". Existing Apple Pay automations keep working.

Changed

  • Where It Went shows the shape of your month, and every category opens

One colour strip shows your five biggest categories, matched by colour in the list below. Tap any category to see its transactions for the month or range you're viewing.

  • The Bank Alert action explains how it reads a message

Its description in Shortcuts and the setup screen now say what newmonth reads itself and what it leaves to Apple Intelligence.

  • Bank Alerts read more languages and currencies

Balance lines and labels in nine more languages, from French to Turkish, are no longer read as income, and an amount with its currency in front, like "-£ 12.50", gets the right currency. Apple Intelligence now reads every language it supports.

  • A card's payment due day is set once, not every month

Statement tracking now asks for a day of the month instead of a date that went stale after one statement. Each due date follows from the statement you enter, so the account, Home and the reminder agree. A due date you set before keeps its day.

  • The small import arrow beside the payee in an account's list is gone

It marked every imported or captured transaction and told you nothing you could act on.

  • Apple Pay Capture and Bank Alerts have their own Settings section, Automation

They used to sit under Import & Export, next to one-off file moves.

  • Next month's top-up asks for the full amount until the month begins

For a Top up to goal, money left in the category counts toward next month only once that month starts, so a plan made on payday doesn't shrink while you keep spending. Any extra on the 1st shows as Overfunded.

  • A repeating goal asks for its full amount every cycle

A goal that repeats every few months or once a year now counts only what you assign this cycle, so last cycle's leftovers don't shrink the ask. Paying the bill, early or late, never makes it ask again.

  • Setting up a goal shows what it will ask this month

The line under the goal now names what's left to assign this month, say "$100.00 to assign this month.", the same amount the goal's Assign button shows. The old "… per month" line often named a different amount.

Fixed

  • Snooze is offered only where it applies

Snooze this month no longer shows for a month that hasn't begun, a goal with no deadline, or a goal that starts later.

  • Renaming a payee to fix its capitalization now works

Renaming "EDEKA" to "Edeka" left every transaction as "EDEKA".

  • A snoozed goal on an overspent category says Resume goal

It read Snooze this month, and tapping it switched the snooze off.

  • A new goal's first due date follows the month you're planning

A goal created while viewing next month took its first due date from today and could ask for the whole amount at once.

  • The budget catches up when a new day begins

Left open overnight, it showed what goals asked the day before until you changed something.

  • The goal's Assign button is in German

The German app showed it as "Assign …".

  • A repeating goal's due date matches the month you're looking at

Every month showed the due date of today's cycle, so a later month showed a date already behind it.

  • "Entered by" on a recurring transaction names who set it up

In a shared budget, a posted bill named whoever's phone opened the app first and showed in Recent Activity as if they'd just added it. Bills posted before this update keep their old label.

  • Quick-Assign shows the real figures in a month that already has money assigned

Rules like "Assigned Last Month" showed only what a tap would add, often far less than you really assign. They now show the real figure, and the line beneath ("Assigns …") what a tap adds.

  • A transfer shows whose accounts it moves money between

In a shared budget, the From and To rows now name the other person under their accounts.

  • Statement tracking no longer asks to discard changes you didn't make

Opening it on a card without a statement and tapping Back asked "Discard changes?".

  • Edit Account stops quoting a statement older than a cycle

The Statement tracking row showed a stale statement balance the account itself no longer used.

  • The German explanation on the Statement tracking screen no longer cuts off mid-sentence.

Version 0.10.0

Changed

  • Quick-Assign now offers what a category is short of

Tap ⚡ on a category and the list starts with its own shortfall: "Underfunded", "Overspent" or "Scheduled Shortfall", each with the amount it takes.

  • Assigning money now happens in the budget itself

"Assign Money" switches the budget into assign mode: type into any category, watch To Assign count down, and nothing is saved until "Save Assignments" (✕ backs out). "Quick-Assign by …" fills every category at once by a rule you choose, showing its total before you tap.

  • Home's transaction rows now open right where you are

"transactions to review" and the other transaction rows on Home open their own list in place instead of filtering the Transactions tab, which stays as you left it.

  • Over-assigned is now a tap away from fixed

When To Assign is negative, tap the red banner to enter assign mode. The new "Overfunded" rule takes back exactly what sits beyond your goals, never money a category has already spent.

  • Quick-Assign rules now layer instead of overwriting each other

A rule fills only the categories without an amount yet, so you can apply "Underfunded" for your goals, then "Assigned Last Month" for the rest. An amount you typed yourself is never overwritten.

  • The memo field now says what it's for

It reads "Add a note…" instead of "Memo (optional)".

Fixed

  • A shared budget no longer enters a repeating transaction twice

When both phones opened newmonth on the day a repeat was due, before syncing, each entered it. newmonth now clears the second copy away once they sync; duplicates from before this update you delete yourself.

  • Repeating transactions keep the day you picked

One set to the 31st now falls back to the last day of a short month and returns to the 31st after, instead of drifting for good. Existing ones keep their current day; change the date to put one back.

Version 0.9.0

TestFlight only — this version was never released on the App Store. Its changes reach App Store users as part of 0.10.0.

New

  • Home tab

The app now opens on Home: your To Assign amount with a one-tap Assign Money button, a "Needs Attention" list of what to fix (most rows you fix right there), and what's scheduled for the rest of the month. When everything's done, it says "All caught up".

  • Pinned categories on Home

Pin the categories you check most (Home → Pinned) to see their available amounts under your worklist; tap one for the same actions as a long press in the budget. Pins stay on this device.

  • Recent Activity on Home

In a shared budget, Home shows the last few transactions the other person entered, never your own.

  • Getting Started lives on Home

In a brand-new budget, the setup checklist sits on Home with a button for each step, and ticks itself off as you go.

  • Search and filter chips in the budget

Tap the magnifying glass to search categories by name, or pick a chip: "Underfunded", "Overspent" or "Snoozed".

  • "With Goal" filter in the budget

A chip that leaves only the categories whose goal is running this month, funded and snoozed ones included.

  • A nudge to schedule your first bill

Until a budget has scheduled anything, Home's "Upcoming" block offers to set up a monthly bill and names a payee that comes back every month ("Netflix shows up every month — schedule it?").

  • Tips on Home

Now and then, Home suggests one feature that fits your budget, such as Apple Pay capture or a backup. Dismiss a tip with ✕ and it never comes back on this device.

Changed

  • Coming back lands where you left off

When iOS closes newmonth in the background, it reopens on the tab you were on. Close it yourself from the app switcher and it starts on Home, as before.

  • "I'll explore on my own" now means it

Choosing it on the welcome screen turns the floating guide off; the Getting Started checklist stays on Home for you to work through in any order.

  • The category menu is the same everywhere

A long press on a category in the budget offers the same actions as tapping a pinned one on Home. Move to group, hide and delete moved into Manage Category.

Removed

  • The budget's "scheduled transactions" alert is gone.

It only ever reported a number and came back every time you scheduled something. What's actually due is on Home, under "Upcoming".

  • The budget search's "With Money" filter is gone.

In a zero-based budget nearly every category holds money, so it narrowed nothing.

Fixed

  • Dismissing the Getting Started guide has a Cancel button

The confirmation used to offer only "Dismiss Guide".

  • Uncleared shows a transfer once

Filtering all transactions by Uncleared listed both sides, so the list didn't match the "N uncleared" count above it.

  • An account's register always shows its full ledger

A filter set on the Transactions tab used to follow you into the register and hide most of it, sometimes all of it.

  • A moved category lands at the end of its new group

Instead of an arbitrary spot in the middle. New categories without a group go to the end too.

  • Tapping "Show" no longer nudges the list

A notice above your transactions and the filter chip it turns into are now the same height.

  • A recurring transaction set up for today arrives reviewed

You typed it, so it no longer lands in "Needs Review".

  • Moving a recurring transaction's date back no longer duplicates it

Dates it already entered are skipped; ones it genuinely missed are still added.

  • Changing a transfer to an Expense or Income really converts it

It used to stay a transfer underneath, so its two sides stopped matching and the budget didn't count the expense. Saving now converts it and removes the other side, after a confirmation that names that account.

  • "Post Now" works after changing a scheduled transaction into a transfer

It used to leave the transfer scheduled. "Post Now" now also asks what "Save" asks.

  • Warnings about a transfer look at both sides

Editing or deleting one side now warns you when the other was locked by a reconciliation or sits in a closed account.

Version 0.8.0

TestFlight only — this version was never released on the App Store. Its changes reach App Store users as part of 0.10.0.

New

  • People in a shared budget

Give each account an owner (Settings → Accounts → edit), and every phone opens new transactions on its owner's account and remembers payees per person. Transactions show who entered them.

  • Apple Pay capture

Set up a Shortcuts automation once (Settings → Import & Export → Apple Pay Capture) and every Apple Pay tap lands in your "to review" list with its category filled in. Card swipes, online checkouts and direct debits aren't reported to apps.

  • Group accounts by person

In a shared budget, "Group by Person" in the Accounts tab's ⋯ menu arranges accounts by whose they are instead of by type.

Fixed

  • Apple Pay captures arrive as Uncleared

A just-tapped payment is still pending at your bank, so it no longer counts as cleared from the start.

  • People shows up only once someone joins

A solo budget no longer shows a lone "You" row under Edit Budget.

  • A partner's name appears as soon as it syncs

Instead of "Someone" until the next app launch.

  • No lost assignments when two phones open the same month

In a shared budget, merging the duplicate month could silently drop assigned amounts. Every assignment now survives.

  • Category Trends averages start at a category's first spending

A newer category was averaged over the whole range, so €1,700/month could read as €258/month.
