Export a backup or a CSV

You can save a whole budget as a file. Use it as a backup or to copy the budget. Or you can export its transactions as a spreadsheet.

Export

  1. Tap on the Home tab, then Settings → Import & Export → Export Budget.
  2. Under Budget, pick the budget. The one you have open is already selected.
  3. Under Format, choose Budget File or Spreadsheet (CSV).
  4. Tap the export button at the bottom. Then choose where to save the file, for example in Files.

Which format

  • Budget File is a complete copy: accounts, categories, goals, assignments and transactions. Assignments are the money you gave to each category. Keep this file as your backup. It doesn't depend on iCloud. It is also the only format newmonth can import again.
  • Spreadsheet (CSV) lists all transactions as a table for Excel, Numbers or another budgeting app. A split transaction gets one row per part. It holds no assignments, so newmonth can't turn it back into a budget.

Import a budget file

  1. In Settings → Import & Export, tap Import Budget File and pick the file.
  2. Check the number of accounts and transactions. Then tap Import.

The file always becomes a new budget next to your others. Your existing budgets never change. So this is also a way to make a copy of a budget. See Use more than one budget .

Good to know

  • A budget file doesn't keep sharing, payee rules or who entered each transaction. An imported budget starts unshared.
  • An older version of newmonth can't read a file from a newer version. Update the app first.

Exporting doesn't make backups automatically. Export again whenever you want a new copy.
