Import transactions from a file

Download your transactions from your bank's website. Then import them into one account. newmonth reads CSV, OFX/QFX and CAMT XML files.

Steps

  1. On the Accounts tab, open the account the file belongs to.
  2. Tap → Import Transactions → Choose File. Pick one CSV, or one or more OFX or CAMT files.
  3. For a CSV, check Map Columns. Here you tell newmonth which column holds what. Check the Header row, the Date Column, Payee Column and Amount Column, and the Date Format. Some banks use a Debit Column and Credit Column instead of one amount. If spending shows as positive, turn on Flip Sign. Tap Next.
  4. In the preview, switch off any row you don't want.
  5. A row that fits one you already have shows it underneath. Exact, Strong and Possible say how sure the app is. Accept Match is already chosen and matches the two. Choose Import as New to keep both.
  6. Tap the import button at the bottom.

Where imported rows land

  • They arrive cleared: your bank already shows them. They still wait for your review. See Review captured transactions .
  • Each gets a category from a payee rule . Without a rule, it gets the payee's last category. Spending without either waits in Category Needed. Income without either goes to To Assign, the money you have not planned yet.
  • When rows match, your category and note stay. The file only fills in what was empty, like the bank's reference.
  • Rows you imported before are marked as duplicates and switched off. If one really is a second purchase, switch it back on.

Good to know

  • newmonth remembers which column holds what in a CSV. So the next file from the same bank sets itself up. To forget a bank, open Settings → Import & Export → Import Profiles and swipe it. Or tap Clear All.
  • Coming from YNAB? Go to Settings → Import & Export → Import from YNAB. Tap Select YNAB Export Files and pick both CSV files from the YNAB export. Then tap Import Data. This creates a new budget. It never changes your existing ones.

Choose the account before you import. Every row in the file lands in that one account.
