Payee rules

A payee is who you pay or who pays you. Banks write payees their own way: "REWE SAGT DANKE 47281" instead of "REWE". A payee rule teaches newmonth the name once. It renames the payee when a transaction comes in. It can also give it a fixed category. So the row arrives clean.

Where rules apply

  • Apple Pay and bank alert captures.
  • Transactions you import from a file . You already see the result in the preview.
  • A payee you type for the first time while adding a transaction. Its category is filled only if you haven't picked one.

Rules never change a row you already have. These all stay as they are: a payee you've used before, when you type it yourself; transfers; transactions you edit; and a capture that is matched to an existing transaction. A YNAB import or a budget file doesn't apply rules either.

Create a rule while renaming

  1. On the Transactions tab, tap → Manage Payees and tap a payee.
  2. Tap → Rename and type the new name.
  3. Turn on Remember for future transactions.
  4. Under Payee name, adjust the Pattern. Choose Exactly, Starts with or Contains. Then tap .

Merge with… has the same switch. From then on, the name you merge away is renamed to the payee you keep.

Edit your rules

  1. In Manage Payees, tap Rules.
  2. Tap to add a rule, or tap a rule to change it. Swipe a rule to delete it.
  3. Set the Pattern, the match and Rename to. If you like, add a Category. Then tap .

Good to know

  • Matching ignores upper and lower case and accents. Several rules may match. Then Exactly wins over Starts with, and Starts with wins over Contains. After that, the longer pattern wins.
  • Rules sync, so everyone in a shared budget gets the same names.

You can only set a fixed category in the rules editor. Renaming or merging creates a rule that only renames.
