How a month works
You plan one month at a time. When money comes in, you give it a plan. During the month, you spend by that plan. The Budget tab shows one month. The card at the top shows the money you have not planned yet.
To Assign
- To Assign is all the money that came into your budget accounts, minus everything you assigned, across all months. Overspending from last month also comes out of it.
- While some money is not planned yet, the card shows the amount and the words To Assign. Tap the card to start assigning ( Assign money ). Or tap for help.
- At zero, the card goes away: all your money has a plan.
- If the card turns red, you've assigned more than you have. Lower an amount you assigned, or move money out of a category. The Overfunded rule takes back what sits beyond your goals.
- All months share one pot of money. Money you assign in a future month also comes out of today's To Assign. So you can't use the same money twice.
Assigned, spent, available
Each category row shows what you assigned this month. It also shows an Available amount: what is left to spend. Available is Carried Over (what was left from last month), plus Assigned, minus Spent. Touch and hold a category and choose Manage Category to see all four numbers.
Into the next month
- Money left in a category moves into the next month by itself. Unspent grocery money is still there.
- A category is overspent when you spent more than it had. It starts the next month at zero. The amount it was over comes out of next month's To Assign instead. To fix it in the same month, see Cover overspending .
- Amounts you assigned don't repeat by themselves. Each month starts with nothing assigned. Quick-Assign can repeat last month's amounts for you.
Switch months
- On the Budget tab, tap the month at the top.
- Pick a month: any past month, or up to three months ahead. Tap or to change the year.
- To get back, tap next to the month, or Today in the picker.
Overspending doesn't disappear at the end of the month. It lowers next month's To Assign.
