Set up your budget

A new budget already comes with a set of common categories. A category is one part of your plan, like Rent or Groceries. Setting up takes four short steps. The Getting Started checklist on the Home tab guides you through them. It ticks off each step as soon as your budget shows it's done.

Steps

  1. Tap Add your first account on the welcome screen, or Add Account on the Accounts tab. Give the account a name. Pick its Type. Under Opening Balance, enter how much money is in it today. Tap to save. More in Add an account .
  2. Open the Budget tab and give that money a plan: tap a category and type an amount. To Assign is the money you have not planned yet. Keep going until it reaches zero. More in Assign money .
  3. Tap on the Home or Budget tab and enter something you spent. See Add a transaction .
  4. Make the categories fit your life: touch and hold a category and choose Manage Category. There you can rename it, change its emoji or delete it. You can add your own categories too. See Categories .
  5. Optional: give a category a goal. A goal says how much the category needs, so you always know what to give it each month. See Set a goal .

When the four required steps are done, tap Finish.

Good to know

  • The order is up to you. Adding an account from the Accounts tab ticks the same step. So does assigning money right on the budget.
  • On the other tabs, a small button in the corner shows your next step. Tap it to open the checklist.
  • Tap I'll explore on my own on the welcome screen to turn off the highlights. The checklist stays on Home.
  • To hide the checklist, tap on it and choose Dismiss Guide.
  • You can bring it back anytime under Settings → Help & Support → Show Getting Started Guide. Settings opens from on any tab.

The button only appears once the budget has an account, so add one first.
