Assign money
To Assign is the money you have not planned yet. Assigning gives it a plan: you put it into categories until nothing is left. You do this right on the budget. Nothing is saved until you say so.
Steps
- On the Budget tab, tap the To Assign card at the top. Or tap → Assign Money, or Assign Money on the Home tab.
- Tap a category and type the amount it should get. To Assign goes down as you type. Every amount you change stays highlighted until you save.
- To fill many categories at once, tap on the To Assign card and pick a rule. Each rule shows its amount before you tap it.
- Tap Save Assignments when the numbers look right. To stop without saving, tap and confirm with Discard.
Quick-Assign rules
- Underfunded fills up your goals, the amounts your categories need. It also covers overspending, where you spent more than a category had. And it sets money aside for upcoming scheduled spending.
- Assigned Last Month and Spent Last Month repeat last month.
- Average Assigned and Average Spent use the average of the last 12 months.
- Overfunded finds money beyond your goals and returns it to To Assign.
A rule that would change nothing isn't listed. Rules only fill categories you haven't changed yet. So you can use them one after another: Underfunded first, then Assigned Last Month for the rest. Amounts you typed yourself always stay.
Good to know
- Nothing is ever assigned automatically. You pick the rule, see every category it changes, then save.
- Tapping a category also offers Quick-Assign for that category alone, with a way back to its earlier amount.
- You can assign more than you have. The card turns red and shows by how much. Lower an amount to fix it. Is To Assign already negative before you start? Tap the red card on the Budget tab. Then lower amounts, or pick Overfunded under .
- While you assign, the tab bar is hidden and you can't switch months. So your changes can't get lost.
Rules only ever add money, except Overfunded. To lower one category, type a smaller amount.
