Cover overspending
A category is overspent when you've spent more than it holds. Its Available amount, the money left to spend, turns red. That's normal. To cover it, you move money in from somewhere else. Then your plan matches what really happened.
Where it shows
- On the Budget tab, the category's Available amount is red. An alert at the top names the category and the amount.
- On the Home tab, under Needs Attention.
Steps
- On the Budget tab, tap the overspent category.
- Tap the button below it that assigns the missing amount. To Assign is the money you have not planned yet. If it has enough, you're done: the money comes from To Assign.
- If To Assign doesn't have enough, the Cover Overspending window opens with your categories. Pick where the money should come from: a category with money to spare, or To Assign. The amount fills in by itself. It is never more than that source holds.
- Still not enough? Tap Add another category and pick a second source.
- Tap to cover.
Tapping the alert at the top of the budget opens the same window.
Good to know
- Card or cash makes no difference. Spending too much on a credit card works like spending too much from your bank account. The category turns red, and you cover it the same way.
- When you assign money, the category's Quick-Assign offers the missing amount. The Underfunded rule covers every overspent category at once. See Assign money .
- Covering only moves money between categories in your plan. No transaction is created.
If you don't cover it, nothing breaks. When the next month starts, the category begins again at zero. The overspent amount comes out of that month's To Assign.
