Reconcile an account
Reconcile means you check that the app's balance matches your bank's. You enter the balance your bank shows. Then you mark the transactions the bank already has. When the numbers match, newmonth locks those transactions.
Steps
- On the Accounts tab, open the account.
- Tap → Reconcile.
- Under Statement Balance, enter the balance from your bank app or statement. A statement is the list of payments your bank sends you.
- Go through the list. Swipe right on each transaction the bank shows, then tap Clear. A cleared transaction is one your bank already shows. Cleared Balance and Difference update as you go.
- On a row that still needs review, the button reads Reviewed. Tap it, then swipe again and tap Clear.
- When Difference reaches zero, tap Finish.
- You can't find the gap? Tap Adjust & Finish and confirm. newmonth adds an adjustment transaction for the difference. Then it finishes.
Tap to leave without changes. Every transaction gets back the cleared status it had before.
The adjustment
- It's a cleared transaction in the same account, dated today. Its payee is "Reconciliation Balance Adjustment".
- On a checking, savings or cash account, it goes to To Assign, the money you have not planned yet. A positive difference adds money to plan with. A negative one takes money away.
- Before you adjust, look for a missing or doubled transaction. Fixing the real mistake is better than an adjustment.
- Reconcile often, for example every week, using your bank app or statement. Then the gap is small and easy to find.
Reconciled transactions
After Finish, every cleared transaction is reconciled and locked. Reconciled means you checked it against your bank's balance, and it's locked. If you change the row, that balance no longer matches.
- To change one anyway, swipe right on it and tap Reconciled. Or touch and hold it and tap Unlock.
- If you edit a reconciled transaction, the app asks first. Save Anyway saves and unlocks it.
- To keep the list short, open the account and tap → Hide Reconciled.
Investment accounts don't have Reconcile. They use Update Value instead. See Track an investment's value .
