Close or delete an account

Close an account you no longer use. It gets out of the way and keeps its history. Deleting removes it for good. It only works once the account has no transactions.

Close an account

  1. On the Accounts tab, touch and hold the account and tap Close Account. Or open it and tap → Edit Account → Close Account.
  2. Confirm with Close Account.

The account moves to Closed Accounts at the bottom of the list. You can no longer pick it for new transactions. Its history still counts in Insights. To use it again, tap Closed Accounts to open the list. Then touch and hold the account and tap Reopen Account.

If it still has a balance

Closing adds an adjustment: a transaction that brings the balance to zero.

  • On a checking, savings or cash account, that amount comes out of To Assign. To Assign is the money you have not planned yet. Did the money already go to another account? Then add that transfer first, and close after. See Transfer between accounts .
  • On a credit card or loan, the adjustment doesn't change To Assign. Maybe you plan money for the card in a category. That category is hidden while the account is closed.

Delete an account

  1. Close it first.
  2. Tap Closed Accounts to open the list. Touch and hold the account and tap Delete. Or open → Edit Account → Delete Account.
  3. Confirm with Delete.

If the account still has transactions, newmonth tells you how many. Then it deletes nothing. The adjustment from closing counts too. There are two ways to empty the account. Edit each transaction and choose another account. Or open the account, tap Select, select the transactions and tap Delete. See Edit, select and delete transactions .

Deleting can't be undone, and nothing is moved for you. Leaving an account closed is usually enough.
