Track an investment's value
An investment account is a tracking account: an account you watch but don't plan with. It shows what your stock or retirement account is worth. It never touches your budget. From time to time you type its value. newmonth records the difference as a gain or loss.
Set it up
- Add an account and pick Investment under Tracking.
- Enter what's in it today as the Opening Balance. That amount counts as invested. Gains count from here on.
Update the value
- On the Accounts tab, open the account.
- Tap → Update Value. Or tap Updated at the top. Before the first update, it says Add value.
- Type what the account is worth. Set As of to the day the value is from.
- Change shows the difference that will be recorded. Tap to save.
What the numbers mean
- Current Value: what the account is worth.
- Invested: what you put in minus what you took out. That is the opening balance and every transfer in or out.
- Gain: Current Value minus Invested. It comes from value updates, dividends and fees.
You can transfer money in from a budget account. That is a transfer with a category, because the money leaves your budget. See Transfer between accounts .
Good to know
- You can enter past values from old statements in any order, oldest or newest first. Each one keeps the value you typed. A second update on the same day replaces the first.
- To fix an update, tap it in the account's list. You can change it there or tap Delete Value Update.
- Five weeks after your last update, the account reminds you to update the value. So does its row on the Accounts tab.
- On Insights, tap Net Worth. When your investments changed in value, the change splits into Saved and Gain. Money you transferred in counts as saved.
- You can't update a closed investment account. When you reopen it, it gets back the value it had when you closed it.
Investment accounts have no Reconcile. Update Value takes its place.
