Add an account
Add every place your money lives: bank accounts, cash, cards and loans. You plan with the money in budget accounts. A tracking account is one you watch but don't plan with. It only counts toward your net worth: what you own minus what you owe.
Steps
- On the Accounts tab, tap Add Account below the list, or tap → Add Account.
- Type the Account Name.
- Tap Type and pick one. Under On-Budget you find Checking, Savings, Cash, Credit Card and Loan. Under Tracking you find Investment, Mortgage, Asset, Liability and Other.
- In a shared budget, pick the Owner: one person, or Everyone for a joint account.
- Enter the Opening Balance: what the account holds today. On a credit card or loan, enter what you owe. It counts as a negative amount. If the account is empty, leave it at zero.
- If you like, add a Note, like "joint account with Anna" or "2% cashback card". Notes are only for you. They never change any numbers.
- Tap to save. For a credit card or loan, newmonth then asks if you want to plan money for it each month. If you always pay it off in full, tap Skip. See Credit cards and loans .
Budget or tracking
- To Assign is the money you have not planned yet. The opening balance of a checking, savings or cash account goes there, ready for you to plan with.
- Income into a budget account raises To Assign. Spending from one lowers the category you picked.
- Debt you already owe on a card or loan doesn't lower To Assign. To plan money for paying it off, see Credit cards and loans .
- Tracking accounts never touch your budget. They show up in Net Worth on the Insights tab.
- You can transfer money from a budget account into a tracking account. This needs a category, because the money leaves your budget. Money coming back goes to To Assign unless you pick a category, or pays down debt.
Good to know
- You can't change the type after saving. Check it before you save.
- The Owner row only appears once someone else has joined your budget. See People in a shared budget .
- You can change the name, owner and note later. Open the account and tap → Edit Account.
